They say that by the 15th week of pregnancy, unborn babies have developed their sense of hearing. Besides listening to music, hearing mom and dad’s voice is one of the most stimulating experiences for an unborn baby. Reading to your child in utero allows them to recognize voices and sound patterns – this is amazing for fetal cognitive development! Books are also a great gift to pass down to children. I remember growing up, my dad gifted me a copy of The Art of War which he inscribed with his own words of wisdom – to this day, I still treasure it and plan to pass it down to my own baby someday!

Here are 5 great books for expecting parents to read to their baby:

1) Goodnight, Anne by Kallie George; Illustrated by Genevieve Godbout

Inspired by Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables, this beautifully illustrated Canadian novel is reinterpreted into a soothing bedtime story where Anne wishes everyone good night before going to bed. Including characters and motifs from the actual novel, this sweet bedtime tale is essentially a lullaby in visual form.

2) If You Happen To Have A Dinosaur by Linda Bailey; Illustrated by Colin Jack

A charming book narrated by a little boy with his own recommendations on what to do if you happen to own a dinosaur! From eating your homework to cracking nuts, you’ll soon learn that dinosaurs are very useful household pets.

3) Owls Are Good At Keeping Secrets, An Unusual Alphabet by Sara O’Leary

A quirky lesson is the alphabet with fun animal facts and adorable illustrations. Full of quotable lines and simple but fun vocabulary, this book will become a definite re-read in any household!

4) Solutions for Cold Feet and Other Little Problems Written and Illustrated by Carey Sookocheff

Narrated by a witty little girl, she and her pet dog explore solutions for basic life problems in the most charming and humorous way. This book will be a very fun book to read together and come up with your own solutions for cold feet!

5) The Night Garden by Polly Horvath

This chapter book follows the adventures of 12-year-old Franny. Set during WWII in British Columbia and full of dramatic larger than life charters, this book will be the perfect bedtime story to transport your baby into a world of orphans, secret gardens, and long lost families.

  1. I hail from Alberta too! My favorite book growing up was The Pokey Little Puppy. I have an 8 week old son and I want to have a nice collection of wonderful books as he grows older. We are already reading a book before bed (what I try for) and he seems interested. My Instagram is @nelsonsj9
