With summer around the corner, parents are starting to gear up to hit the beach with their kids. Though it is great to get outside and soak up some vitamin D, babies react to the sun much differently than adults. Sunburns for adults causes tissue damage but in babies, it can be much more severe.
That is why babies absolutely need to be protected when out in the sun. Here are some tips on how to safely enjoy the weather with your newborn:
- Wear protective clothing: Make sure to pack a brimmed sunhat, sunglasses and ensure your baby is wearing a UV protection shirt (or even just a long sleeve shirt).
- Stay in the shade: Between the hours of 11am – 4pm, the sun’s UV rays are at it’s strongest. Stay in the shade as much as possible to ensure baby is not in direct sunlight.
- Use sunscreen: Choose a baby-friendly sunscreen with minimum SPF-30. Personally, I love Attitude products. Not only are they made in Canada but they are also fragrant free and hypoallergenic. I was lucky to get a few samples from Attitude to try out for my baby and we are loving the Attitude Mineral Face Stick! It’s easy to apply on a squirmy baby and small enough for me to keep in my purse to re-apply! I low-key use this on myself as well so I don’t have to carry 2 sunscreens with me.
Hope everyone has a safe and exciting summer!
