Known for it’s rye, Canadian whisky is one of the youngest whiskies on the market. Because of this, many Canadian whiskies do not have an age statement. That’s why when Beam Suntory announced that they would be releasing a 40 year old Canadian Club, folks went bananas! On top of that, to price a 40 year old whisky at $250CAD – well, that was just unheard of.
I had the opportunity to attend a Toronto tasting of the Canadian Club 40 recently. As expected from a 40 year old whisky, this dram was smooooooth like Mr. Steal Your Girl and stayed true to it’s Canadian Club features with caramel and peppery notes coming from the rye. I would have preferred the whisky have a little more depth in the palette and finish – I think a whisky of this calibre could have had a little more “oomph”. Overall, very easy drinking. Not complex but sometimes simple is good.
Tasting Notes: Caramel, Pepper, Citrus
If you’re lucky, you can get this bottle for $250CAD at the LCBO
