Earlier this year, I did a wine tour to Niagara-on-the-Lake with the wine angels at iYellow Wine Club. One thing I love about being part of iYellow is that no matter how much you know about wine – from beginner to a sommelier – you know you’re going to have a good time (and learn something new)! Our tour consisted of 3 – 5 samples per winery with a range of wines from Cabernet Franc to ice wines.

We started our trip at Stratus Vineyards, known for their Stratus Red and Stratus White wines. As we walked through the vineyard and distillery, we were walked through the fermenting and barrelling process. This was really fun for me as a whisky drinker because even though I didn’t know much about wine, I was able to understand the importance of cooperage, time spent in barrels and blending.  We then moved to Southbrook Vinyard where we sampled a selection of their wines.

Our final stop at 13th Street Winery included a night of wine sampling, country music and food trucks at the Niagara Homegrown Tailgate. This was definitely the highlight of the night as there were many Niagara-on-the-Lake vineyards present and sampling their products.

Overall, the tour was an amazing introduction of the wines of Niagara-on-the-Lake. No matter what level of experience you had drinking wine, there was something for everyone! I would highly recommend both an iYellow Wine Tour and the Niagara Wine Festival to anyone looking to expand their wine horizons.
